I’m extremely passionate about music, I eat, sleep and live it. I believe it is important to take lessons from someone who is enthusiastic and infatuated with the subject to help inspire, and keep you on track with your development as a musician. Everyone has their own taste, and their own speed of learning and it is essential that a teacher supports you to reach your individual goals. I believe a good teacher will give you what you want; and should know what you will need. I believe everyone has the ability to learn and that the more you devote to music the more you will get out
Teaching Material
For Beginners / Intermediate students I primarily use 2 method books as a teaching aid:
- Essential Elements
- Rubank
These books are great but they are written based on the learning abilities of the average. In addition to these I have accumulated my own collection of repertoire to help students develop and give them a break from the method books. I find the Rubank book is useful for developing technique and scales, where Essential Elements serves as a broad learning tool covering theory, repertoire and technique. With this combination I strongly believe I have the right resources to build a strong musical foundation for my students.
Advanced Students
Most students at this level have been exposed to method books throughout their musical career. I like to break them away from this and expose them to different pieces focused in the area of classical or jazz, or a combination of both. Those interested in pursuing Jazz learn about improvising, Jazz theory, and jazz standard repertoire. Emphasis on tone development, and listening is also encourage whether focusing on jazz or classical. Classical focused students are introduced do the different eras of classical music from impressionism (Debussy) to baroque (J.S Bach) to modern composers (Paul Creston). Preparation and coaching for auditions to secondary or tertiary education in music is available, and encourage if it’s the students interest.
